recap: august

august

august_purchases
[buying]
i was looking back at what i bought last august and gray flats and workout tanks seem to be a recurring theme around here.  #sopredicatable

rebecca taylor leo combo pullover: $119 via nordstrom rack.  this fall i am totes ready for sweater season.  (seen here)

gap suede loafers in gray: $30 via gap.com.  i haven't worn these yet because it keeps raining and i don't want them to get muddy, but they are going to be besties with my gray jeans.  i just know it.

gapfit double-layer scoop back tank: $25 via gap.com.  hot yoga in the summer is no joke.

Y.A.S. cube dress with mesh overlay: $81 via asos.com.  i ordered this as a potential birthday dress (i've got a big birthday coming up in october) and it's a bit more tee-shirt-ish than i thought.  so it's not THE one, but a fun dress for my "architects only wear black" collection.

p.s. have you met franish?  want to see what a bunch of other bloggers bought this month?  yup yup?  head on over there then.

dotty, summer whites, and monster totes

WHITE SANDWICH [wearing]
top: labworks for target (exactly)
dress underneath: rachel rachel roy (exactly)
sandals: gap (exactly)
tote: madewell (exactly)
bracelet: h&m

creative: yay!  i found something else to wear this marshmallow top with.  seeing that it's the same color doesn't make this all that creative, but this top has been stumping me lately with all the pants combinations i've tried.
young: sandals.  (it's summer and i work in a casual office, so it's totally fine.)
professional: neutrals?  (well, that's everyday lately.)  a giant tote?  (this bag does tend to make me feel more important.)

dotty, saturday mornings, and summer scarves

august outfit, farmer's marketing, what to wear, saturday morning outfit, scarf outfit ideas, cognac and gray, neutrals blog [wearing]
dress: c/fan (similar)
scarf: target
sandals: gap (exactly)
tote: madewell (exactly)

[three things]
1. the slouchy dress, big scarf, and a big tote combination has been one of my favorites this summer.

2. and shortly after these photos were taken i was all stocked out on michigan-grown fruit and our dining room table has a fresh bunch of white gladiolus.  a few years ago when we lived in a shoebox, i used to buy giant flowers at the farmer's market and then they would loom over the couch all week.  #imposingflorals

3. why have i not worn this dress to work in awhile?  is it because it's a wee bit too short?

weekend wishlist: fun flats

wishlist_0824
one, two, three, four, five, and six.

+
back when i started working i had this grand idea to have a pair of shoes in every color of the rainbow.  (i think i only got to purple, yellow, and turquoise.)  while i've abandoned brights since then, i've amassed a serious collection of patterned flats over the last few years.  unfortunately, a few of my favorites are showing signs of wear from all my puddle-stomping and chair-kicking (i kick my heel against my desk chair while i work...weird, shoe-destroying habit fo sho).  so i'm on the hunt for some fun replacements before boot season starts 'round here.

dotty, summer shorts, and lunchtime sweaters

WEEKEND PATTERN TOWN
[wearing]
sweater: rebecca taylor (exactly)
shorts: target (exactly)
flats: chinese laundry (exactly)
bag: marc by marc jacobs (exactly)

[three things]
1. so i might have bought this sweater during lunch last week.  because the sweater i was wearing was super itchy.  and i had an all-afternoon design meeting that i did not want to wear aforementioned itchy sweater for.  so i went and tried on five tops at nordstrom rack and liked this one the best.  #dottyproblems

2. sometimes i wear shorts.

3. one of my besties once told me that the first six months of any new job are just exhausting while you are learning everything and adjusting to a new environment.  and oh boy, i have definitely been super drained from work lately.  blergh.  on the upside, i am finally get caught up on watching suits.

dotty, casual weddings, and the mister

august outfit
[wearing]
dress: j.crew (exactly)
boots: old navy (exactly)
necklace: forever21
clutch: marc jacobs for target

[three things]
1. i had heels with me in the car, but i was convinced at the last minute just to keep my roadtrip boots on instead.  it was a super casual wedding (there were baseball caps and jeans in attendance) so it was a good call for some wandering between the ceremony and dinner.

2. i should also point out that the boots champion was also wearing boots.  we're cute like that apparently.

3. we've been making a whole lot of trips home to michigan this summer and while we are both super impatient roadtrippers (we require frequent stops for milkshakes) it's been really nice being more connected to our families.

dotty, ikat, green shoes

august outfit
[wearing]
dress: banana republic (exactly)
scarf: merona (similar)
belt: h&m
bag: madewell (exactly)
cloggish shoes: target (similar)

it's been awhile since i've done a workfit breakdown, so here we go...

creative: ever since i got a little creative with my scarf+dress pattern mixing a few weeks ago for a music festival, i've been wanting to do something similar during the week.  two neutral-colored patterns at very different scales doesn't actually seem very crazypants.
young: these clog sandals.  they're not really very professional, but they're a bit dressier than flat sandals.
professional: print shirtdresses are quite possibly the easiest way to dress up for work.

dotty, marshmallows, and bangles

august outfit
[wearing]
marshmallow top: labworks for target (exactly)
skirt: merona (exactly)
flats: old navy (similar)
tote: madewell (exactly)
necklace: h&m
bracelet: h&m

[three things]
1. i really wanted to wear jeans with this top, but it's a little bit shorter in the front and all my jeans looked funny with it.  i think it would look better with pants or a midi skirt that is more fitted at the bottom, but its inaugural wearing was a success anyway.

2. my grouchy desk neighbor even commented that she liked this top.  and she does NOT like me.  or want to talk to me.  or want me to say good morning to her.  so this is a big deal.  and i went to a meeting today where there were snickerdoodles.  cookies and outfit compliments are pretty much what i'm looking for in a job apparently.

3. i wrote about my fitbit bracelet problems last week and after reading all the commiserating comments, i got out my big box of older jewelry and pulled all the big bangles.  this old stretchy one fits perfectly over my standard issue fitbit bracelet and the elastic holding the silver circles together keeps my fitbit stuck hidden.  i can't easily press the button to see my progress, but i like to check it on my phone anyway.  i still want to find a hinged bangle that will work, but that would involve gluing a rubber bracelet to the inside of it.  is that even possible?  superglue?

dotty, every neutral in the book, and cardigan layers

summmer [wearing]
dress: calvin klein (exactly)
cardigan: acne studios (similar)
belt: h&m
loafers: forever21 (exactly)
necklaces: forever21 and lightinthebox
tote: madewell (exactly)

[three things]
1. this dress is a remnant of my days of having to dress super professional for certain meetings with certain clients at my old job.  now i can wear it to work with funny shoes and without a jacket.  huzzah!

2. this cardigan has not gotten nearly enough airtime since the boy got it for me on our honeymoon.

3. my boss totally interrupted a meeting to figure out what it was made of by grabbing my arm and inspecting it very closely.  the person who was talking at the time was kinda pissed off about it.  it was the cardigan, not me!

dotty, early mornings, and sweatpants

august outfit

[wearing]
pants: old navy (exactly)
top: h&m
scarf: marc jacobs for target
bag: marc by marc jacobs (exactly)
sandals: birkenstock (exactly)

[three things]
1. if you ever wondered "hey, what does dotty wear at 7am to the farmer's market to get the good michigan peaches and raspberries?" then this is your lucky day.

2. i've noticed over the last few years that i've shifted my wardrobe to mostly things i would wear to work.  i have basically three categories: work-ish, lounge/yoga, and fancy dresses.  and my closet (now that i can wear denim any day of the week) is about 90% workies, 8% comfies, and 2% fancies.  when i first started working, i bought very basic work clothes and fun stuff only for the weekends.  my closet was probably 60% weekend casual, 20% boring workies, and 20% "going out" clothes.  (we lived in vegas, so my life was a lot more about pools and sequins.)

3. i'm at work a lot of the time, so it makes sense to focus on the workwear portion my wardrobe.  i work in a creative industry where there is a wider range of clothes that fit the dress code, so why not buy pieces that i would want to wear on the weekends too?  i'm not going to wear birks and sweatpants to work, but the rest of this outfit is all things i wear to work.
